Choose your way in
When an initial consultation, when an immediate mandate?
Not every enquiry starts the same way. Sometimes a legal assessment is enough at first. In other cases, a specific matter must be structured as a mandate straight away.
Initial consultation (Erstberatung): when the situation needs to be sorted first
An initial consultation is suitable when the area of law, the risk, the cost framework or the course of action cannot yet be assessed with certainty.
- the area of law or responsibility is unclear
- several topics may be affected
- options and risks are to be assessed
- a first framework for the procedure and costs is needed
- it is unclear whether a package, a mandate or a practice area fits
Prepare an initial consultation for a legal assessment (in German): suitable for unclear situations, several possible areas of law and first decisions.
Initial consultationImmediate mandate or taking on a specific mandate: when a specific matter must be handled
An Abmahnung, a deadline, a formal service of documents or a contract requires a specific response. Taking on the mandate directly is the obvious choice when deadlines are running, documents are available or there is a specific instruction to review or respond.
- an Abmahnung, a letter from an authority or a court document has been received
- a data breach or security incident must be assessed
- a contract is to be specifically reviewed or drafted
- a launch, audit, dispute or platform problem requires action
- a particular service package already seems appropriate
Check specific service packages by occasion (in German): suitable when the occasion is already tangible and there is a defined need for review or implementation.

Orientation
If the right way in is still unclear
Your matter does not have to be perfectly pre-sorted. What matters is whether you first need orientation, a focus on a specific area, a service package or a direct enquiry.

Frequently asked questions about enquiries
What should I briefly describe in my enquiry?
What happened, who is involved, which deadline is running and what outcome you want to achieve. Your enquiry does not need to be long. A short account of the facts, the desired outcome, the persons or companies involved, existing documents and recognisable deadlines are helpful. For platform, data protection, trademark, media or contract questions, links, screenshots and previous communication also help.
Do I already need to know which area of law is affected?
No. Many digital matters touch several areas at once, for example IT law, data protection, AI regulation, competition law, trademark law or media law. The matter can be sorted by subject on the basis of the facts, the goal and the documents. Your enquiry is sorted by subject matter on the basis of the facts, the documents and the recognisable goal. Our services and areas of law pages (in German) give a first overview.
What do I do about deadlines, Abmahnungen or letters from authorities?
State the date, deadline, sender and file reference right at the start and upload the letter so that the urgency is immediately recognisable. Deadlines, service of documents, file reference, sender and the action demanded should be at the very beginning of the enquiry. Attach relevant letters, enclosures and previous communication or keep them ready for further review.
Can I send confidential documents?
Yes. You can upload files (JPG, PNG, PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, max. 10 MB per file) directly in the form. A secure system is available for extensive documents. Only send confidential information to the extent necessary for the first assessment. A reliable review may require further documents, separate discussions or secure transmission channels.
When will I receive a reply?
We reply to first enquiries within 24 hours on working days. The first contact is free of charge. Before any costs arise, we will expressly inform you.
When is an initial consultation more sensible than a direct enquiry for a mandate?
An initial consultation is suitable when the situation is still open, several legal routes are conceivable or risks, options, the cost framework and the course of action are to be assessed first. A direct enquiry for a mandate is more suitable for a specific review instruction, a running deadline or documents that are already available.
Which documents help with the first assessment?
Depending on the matter, contracts, drafts, AGB, AVV, Abmahnungen, letters from authorities, platform messages, screenshots, links, campaign material, technical descriptions, data flow overviews and previous correspondence help.
What happens after I send my enquiry?
Your matter is sorted by subject on the basis of the information provided. Recognisable deadlines and urgency are taken into account. We then clarify whether an initial consultation, a service package, taking on a specific mandate or a follow-up question is the appropriate next step.
Can ITMR also support me on an ongoing basis as a legal point of contact?
Yes, provided the need, the subject area and the scope of the mandate fit. This can be relevant, for example, for digital business models, data protection, AI, platforms, marketing, contracts, trademarks, reputation or ongoing compliance questions.
