CV
Lukas Hess has been a legal trainee at the Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf since October 2024. He studied law at the University of Trier, where he successfully passed the first state examination in 2023. In his university specialisation he deepened his knowledge of international criminal law and white-collar criminal law. Besides international and white-collar criminal law, the specialisation also covered tax criminal law, cybercrime law, the legal consequences of offences and narcotics criminal law.
Lukas Hess wrote a seminar paper on “The right to a self-determined death – discussion of the current draft laws on the new regulation of assisted suicide”, examining the topic, the fundamental and human rights affected and an international legal comparison in depth.
Alongside his studies, Lukas Hess volunteered at a facility for refugees and additionally gave voluntary tutoring to refugees as part of an initiative of Trier city library. In doing so he gained initial knowledge of asylum and residence law. Among other things, he helped with asylum applications, applications for residence permits, matters such as child benefit, procedures for the recognition of professional qualifications and general communication with authorities.
Between his studies and his traineeship he lived and worked in Mexico for two months to improve his Spanish. There he gained first insights into Mexican employment law and corporate structures.
After his studies he gained practical experience as a research assistant at a medium-sized law firm in data protection law, media law and legal tech.
Through various internships lasting several weeks at law firms, a prison, with a criminal defence lawyer and at a court, Lukas Hess gained diverse insights into the varied legal job market.
In the placements of his traineeship so far, he has also gained extensive insight into the work of a judge, a public prosecutor and an officer at the German Pension Insurance.
Out of his interest in international law, he completed certified online courses at US Ivy League universities.
At Harvard Law School and the University of Pennsylvania he took courses in American contract law, gaining initial knowledge of US law.
At Yale University he took the course “Financial Markets” to gain knowledge of finance.
To gain further experience in the international job market, Lukas Hess plans to complete the elective placement of his traineeship at a law firm in Mexico City.
After his traineeship he would like to work as a lawyer.
